The Sinking of the SS Arandora Star 1940: conflicting patterns of remembrance

2015 marks the 75th anniversary of the sinking of the SS Arandora Star which was carrying Italian and German WWII internees to Cananda when she was sunk by a German Uboat in July 1940. Hundreds died with many bodies washed up on the west coast and buried in Ireland.

Grace Ries is studying for an M.Phil. in Public History and Cultural Heritage at Trinity College Dublin, having previously studied Medieval History at the University of East Anglia in the UK. She is particularly interested in collective memory and the politics of commemoration.No booking required.
