Dublin Civic Week: The materialisation of history
5 October, 2016 @ 6:30 pm
In the late 1920s the idea of a Dublin Civic Week celebrating the history, commerce and life of the city was enthusiastically welcomed by Dublin Corporation. Some of the attractions included a Military Tattoo, an Industrial Parade, a Window Dressing Competition and a Floating Ballroom on the Liffey. The actor Micheál Mac Liammóir was asked to write and stage a pageant of the history of Dublin. This talk considers the delicate balance achieved, only a few years after the Civil War, between telling the history of the past and embracing the modernity and promise of the Free State.
Dr Elaine Sisson is a cultural historian and a programme co-ordinator of the BA Design for Stage and Screen at IADT. She is currently researching a book on cultural experiment and the Irish Free State.
