FACES, SPACES, PLACES: AN OVERVIEW OF THE HISTORY OF DUBLIN’S JEWISH COMMUNITY FROM EARLY MODERN TIMES TO THE PRESENT DAY

This talk offers an outline of how the Jewish community of Dublin has developed over almost four centuries. Topics will include: the three main periods of Jewish migration into Ireland; the geographical shift of the Jewish community from north to south inner city and beyond; Dublin Jewish culture and identity in the 20th/21st centuries.
Dr Melanie Brown lectures in the School of History and Humanities, Trinity College, Dublin. Her research interests include Irish Jewish history, identity politics in respect of ethnic and cultural minorities in Ireland, and the role of liturgical music in religious and cultural identity. She is a member of both the Dublin City Interfaith Forum and the Holocaust Education Trust of Ireland.
