Against the backdrop of the Irish War of Independence and the Civil War, numerous so-called ‘Soviets’ emerged across Ireland. Most famously, Limerick in 1919 witnessed a General Strike against militarism which made international headlines as the ‘Limerick Soviet’. Just what motivated these events, and what impact did they have on the broader revolution?
