A Gaggle of Twenty Goslings – Jane Loftus and Childbirth in the Sixteenth Century
September 29 @ 7:30 pm - 8:30 pmFree
Presented by Rathfarnham Castle.
Adam Loftus, the future Archbishop of Dublin and the builder of Rathfarnham Castle, came to Ireland in 1560. He quickly set about starting a family, marrying Jane Purdon mere months after his arrival. They went on to have a large family, with Jane giving birth to twenty children! Typically, nothing more is said about Jane, but what would her life of childbirth have been like?
Join Bríd, a guide at Rathfarnham Castle, in a Zoom illustrated talk about childbirth during the sixteenth century. Hear about how hopping on one foot apparently aided labour. Learn how to pick the best wet nurse. And discover why gossips were an important part of baptisms.
