September 27, 2023 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm
Apologies, this event is now cancelled.
Talk presented by Dr Usama Gad, Ain Shams University, Cairo.
The Egyptian Museum in Cairo is one of the largest museums of antiquity in the world. Its papyrus collection tells the story of Greco-Roman Egypt and the Westerners responsible for it from its inception until the end of colonialism. Dr Gad will explore who was who in the acquisition and cultural appropriation of these artefacts. The scholarly process of excavating and editing papyri will be put in its modern colonial and postcolonial contexts to
gain more insight into the voices that were silenced and amplified in writing the ancient history of Egypt.
