Drop-In Workshop: At Home with the Vikings

[6:7] Reconstruction of Dublin. c. 1000 ad. Based on the most up-to-date archaeological and topographical evidence available from forty years of excavation, most of which was carried out by and for the Museum, the reconstruction shows the comparative scale of the urban area, its streets, lanes and ports (and the location in them of buildings) and how the whole relates to the waterfront, the tidal confluence of the Liffey and its tributary the Poddle and the hinterland. The location chosen by the Vikings was easily defended especially by a waterborne force that required access to boats to facilitate rapid exit. This drawing, prepared by Simon Dick, is the third to be undertaken by the National Museum to show how Dublin might have looked at this time. Wallace 1988; Wallace 1992.
