‘From the Bloody Oakwood to the Iron Mountain in the Footsteps of Giants’, is a walker’s guide, following the epic journey of Donal Cam O’Sullivan Beare, as he and his followers battled against a ruthless enemy, intolerable weather conditions, hunger and betrayal, as they traversed an Ireland ravaged and wasted by English armies in the hope of reaching sanctuary among the O’Rourke’s of Leitrim at the beginning of the 17th century.

Tony Nugent retired from Dublin City Council to return to higher education and received a H Dip in Folklore from UCD and a M.A. from Saor-Ollscoil na hÉireann. A keen hillwalker, he is a member of the Folklore of Ireland Society, Dublin Yarnspinners, a long-term member of An Óige and an accomplished seanós singer. His latest publication in 2020 is ‘From the Bloody Oakwood to the Iron Mountain in the Footsteps of Giants’ which is a walker’s guide. Other books include ‘Legends of the Dispossessed (1550-1830)’ and ‘Were you at the Rock?’ (Penal laws era). He also writes children’s books, which were originally for his grandchildren.
