Growing Old With Shakespeare
October 2 @ 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm
In Shakespeare’s drama ageing is variably described as, ‘when age is in, the wit is out’ (Much Ado About Nothing) and ‘silver hairs/will purchase us good opinion’ (Julius Caesar).
This talk confronts the complexities and contradictions associated with growing old in Shakespeare’s time.
As our population continues to age and incidences of ageism increase, the talk prompts us to reflect on representations of ageing in literary history.
If literature serves as a mirror to culture and society, the talk points to Shakespeare as a means of understanding our own culture today.
The speaker is Anna Graham.
