Pavee Roads Home is an exploration of Traveller culture and heritage told through the lens of history and geography. It was developed by the Men’s Health Team at Pavee Point Traveller & Roma Centre, as a way of promoting a positive sense of identity and culture.
The project focuses around Traveller families living in Finglas and Coolock and tells the stories of how their families migrated to the city over generations.
At this event Michael Collins and Martin Reilly of Pavee Point talk about how the project started and the work that they carried out. They explain how they worked with older Travellers to uncover the histories of their families and then went on to map out some of the camps their families stayed in.
Bridgie Collins and Molly Collins were born on the side of the road and will also be at the event to talk about life on the road. Bridgie will give us a rendition of One Starry Night – a song that was often sung around the campfire.
This event highlights the wealth of history and experience that is part of Traveller identity and culture – one that brings richness and diversity to Dublin history.
Michael Collins is a Men’s Health Worker with Pavee Point Traveller & Roma Centre. He has also worked as part of Pavee Point’s youth team. He is a father of 3 and lives in Coolock and is currently studying for a Degree in Youth and Community Work at Maynooth University.
Martin Reilly is part of the Men’s Health Team at Pavee Point Traveller & Roma Centre. He has been involved in a variety of projects promoting physical fitness and mental fitness among Traveller men in the Eastern region.
Pavee Roads Home was supported by The National Neighbourhood, a Dublin City Council Culture Company programme.
