Reading the Unreadable — Ernie O’Malley’s notebooks
October 7 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

The Irish Manuscripts Commission, established in 1928 after the burning of the Four Courts, publishes primary sources for Irish history. IMC’s publications show history through the eyes of the people who were there. Ernie O’Malley was one such person.
His notebooks are transcripts of interviews with 451 anti-Treaty veterans of the Irish Revolution (1913–23). Recorded between 1948–54, they are a gritty and graphic record of years of struggle. O’Malley’s notoriously illegible handwriting has meant the notebooks are under-used.
Dr Anne Dolan and Dr Eve Morrison will unveil their project to publish the notebooks in eight volumes with the Irish Manuscripts Commission.
