The Countess Prayerbook: An Exploration of Countess Markievicz’s Prison Prayerbook

September 22 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Free

While a prisoner in Cork Gaol in January 1919, Countess Markievicz acquired a copy of ‘The Augustinian Manual’, a prayer book compiled by Rev. Richard A. O’Gorman and published in 1915.

However it seems that the Countess used it less as a prayer book, and more of a kind of scrapbook in which she pasted news clippings about the events of the 1919-21 period, and in particular, reports about those who had lost their lives in the struggle for independence. She also used the prayer book as a place of safekeeping for precious mementoes, including notes written to her by both Patrick Moran and Thomas Whelan just hours before their execution on 14 March 1921.

This prayer book is now in the collection of Kilmainham Gaol Museum and in this online talk Brian Crowley, Collections Curator at the Museum, will share the contents of the prayer book and explore the insight it offers into the life of Countess Markievicz and the remarkable events of those years.
