The Ottoman Empire and the emergence of its ‘Irish Question’

October 11, 2023 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

This talk by Dr Murat Şiviloğlu (Near & Middle Eastern Studies, Trinity College Dublin) will introduce the often-overlooked relationship between the Ottoman Empire and Ireland. Though they seem to exist in disparate historical spheres, Dr Şiviloğlu will delve into the intricate connections between them.

Utilising first-hand accounts, he unveils the perspective that Ottoman intellectuals and statesmen held towards Ireland from the early modern era through the twentieth century. These figures kept an eye on its developments, possibly to navigate their diplomatic relationship with Britain.

He will shed light on the Ottoman Empire’s profound interest in the world beyond its borders, particularly Ireland.
