Dublin Bottle-makers, Internationalism, and the strike of 1886

September 26, 2023 @ 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm

In 1886 Dublin’s Glass Bottle Makers went on strike to oppose a third successive pay-cut. To break the strike, the city’s bottle manufacturers brought over workers from Denmark and Sweden.

However, the Scandinavians joined the strike which would eventually lead to the formation of an International Union of Glass Bottle-makers, who would have significant success in fighting the transporting of workers from low-cost economies to break strikes across Europe.

Talk presented by Hugo McGuinness of the East Wall History Group.
