Reel Germany: A Brief History of German Cinema

From the Second World War to the fall of the Soviet Union and its satellite states Germany was at the epicentre of global historical events. What role did cinema play in the German cultural imagination during those turbulent times?
This talk will take you on a tour of the history of German cinema from its origins in the early 20th century to the present day.
Important events, trends and cultural developments will be traced and exemplified through a discussion of key films from different periods, from the propaganda of dictatorship to the politics of the avant-garde.
