Remembering and forgetting the women prisoners of the Civil War
October 7 @ 11:00 am - 4:00 pm

More than 600 female political prisoners were interned by the Free State government over the course of the Irish Civil War.
To mark the centenary of this event, a special symposium in Kilmainham Gaol will explore the ways in which these women sought to memorialise their role in the conflict, through memoirs, diaries, autograph books and even through graffiti inscribed on their prison cells.
It will also reflect on the ways in which their story was largely forgotten by Irish society for decades, only to be rediscovered in the late 20th century.
